Mark’s experience as a Mentoring Works volunteer
What motivated you to volunteer as a mentor via your company’s volunteering programme?
Throughout school and university I was super fortunate to have mentors both within education and outside. These mentors shaped the direction I chose to travel in life’s journey, and with their support and guidance I’m happy with the path I have taken. I wanted to provide that same mentorship to others who might not be as fortunate as I was.
How has your experience as a mentor been so far? What kinds of things have you covered with your mentee in your sessions?
The sessions to date have largely focused on building a picture of what my mentee is interested in and studying, then mapping these to a number of career paths that they should research. We had discussions that covered what kind of entry criteria those jobs have and what kind of skills need to be developed. We also had a session pretty much solely focused on non-verbal communication and its importance.
What’s the best thing about volunteering?
It’s lovely to pay if forward, but I have very much also enjoyed the interaction, especially learning the latest vernacular which brings a smile to my face. I prepare for each topic in advance, so doing my own research on topics like communication skills, for example, has paid dividends for my own career.
What advice would you give to anyone considering volunteering via their company’s volunteering programme?
Every river starts with a single drop of water. By taking a small amount of your time and investing it in a young individual, that investment will pay dividends to them, their school friends and hopefully in time to the lives of others surrounding them.
